Calvin, Hobbes, Vince, and Jim

There is just something about Calvin and Hobbes that has a universal appeal, isn’t there? It’s kind of like charisma; you just know it when you see it.

I remember reading these comic strips when I was a boy of 7 or 8, just a little older than Calvin himself, and the feeling of simple joy that came along with seeing what adventures he and his tiger were getting into.

It’s like Bill Watterson figured out how to speak to his reader’s souls — kindly, warmly, and with just the right amount of mischief.

The first time I came across Jim Rohn, I had a similar experience. If you’ve not heard of Jim before, he’s one of the godfathers of modern personal development and growth, a topic that I often refer to as Inner Game (to borrow from another guru, Neil Strauss).

I bought one of Jim’s audio books at a point in my life where I was in dire need of… something. I didn’t really know what I needed, but when I started listening to Jim I found it.

This was many years after I had finished a chemotherapy regimen, and had survived cancer for a second time. I was otherwise living a normal life — working, spending time with friends and family, pursuing my various hobbies and interests — but it felt like I was trying to ice skate uphill to do simple things.

I decided it was time to work on that, and thus began my renewed journey inward. So, I reached out, invested a couple dollars, and pressed play. And then, something happened. As I listened to Jim’s material, I felt the fog start to lift. I felt my mind start to change, and also my perspective. I started to wake up, and I was thrilled. I made changes to my life, and started to see what was impacting what.

Sometimes all it can take is the right thought or the right words at the right time to get you to started down a better path. Stay open to the possibility, keep choosing from love, and believe in the magic of every moment.

I do believe all that, but I also believe that we each need a roadmap that makes sense for us, and to us. So, when it’s time to start putting the pieces together in a way that makes sense to you and for you, reach out, let me know, and we’ll press play together.
